Cibolo City Council District 5

I am the current Cibolo City Councilman for District 5.  I was elected on November 6th 2018 to serve the citizens of Cibolo District 5 & to advocate for their family’s best interests.  During my initial term (2018 – 2021) I intend to accomplish the following:  Widen & Improve Roads in District 5, Bring Better Businesses to Cibolo, Keep our Property Taxes Low, Keep our Streets Safe, Increase Community Awareness & Involvement, Work Together with Mayor Boyle & Cibolo City Councilmembers to Constantly Improve our City Infrastructure, Keep Apartments from Being Built in the Heart of Cibolo, & to Determine a Better Way forward than the Current Cibolo Toll Road Agreement.

Community Activism & Political Experience

I’m not a career politician, I am a resident who has lived in & loved Cibolo since 2013.  I am a neighbor & a friend to many people who live in my district.  I am a husband, a father, & a community activist who lives in the Turning Stone neighborhood within Cibolo District Five.  In 2018, I coordinated a group of Turning Stone & Mesa homeowners to attend the Cibolo Planning and Zoning (P&Z) meetings at Cibolo City Hall to speak out about Vantage Apartments proposal to rezone 17 acres of land across the street from Turning Stone & Cibolo Valley Elementary School from single-family residential zoning to multi-family zoning.

This is not the first time I have worked with other homeowners to protest multi-family rezoning requests.  I also helped residents of the Riata neighborhood in Schertz to speak out at the Schertz City Council meetings when a developer wanted to rezone land near Bussey’s Flea Market in Schertz off Interstate 35 to build low-income apartments in 2016.  This rezoning request was ultimately denied by the Schertz Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Commission & the Schertz City Council.

Prior to that, I worked with fellow homeowners in the Fairhaven neighborhood to gain assistance from the City of Schertz and the Guadalupe County Commissioners for negotiations with a homebuilder that had construction defect issues.  This effort was ultimately successful for homeowners who suffered actual damages and they were able to successfully resolve their issues with the homebuilder.

While living in the Fairhaven community in Schertz, I served on the Architectural Control Commission (ACC) for my neighborhood HOA.  We met monthly to review construction proposals submitted by our neighbors to ensure that the requested construction projects conformed to HOA bylaws & provided approval or assistance to members of the community to help them modify their proposals to comply with our HOA guidelines.

In 2008 / 2009 I worked with Ray Lopez on his inaugural campaign when he was running to represent the residents of District Six on the San Antonio City Council.  My efforts included block walking within the district to speak with registered voters to find out what issues were of most concern to them & to educate the voters in District Six about Ray’s positions on issues that are important to San Antonio voters.  Mr. Lopez won his election & went on to represent District Six within the San Antonio City Council from 2009 until 2017 when he was term-limited from seeking re-election in 2017.

As your Councilman for Cibolo City Council District Five, I will advocate for your concerns & the issues that are most important to you, your family, your friends, your neighbors, & everyone who lives in our district.

I signed the petition against the Cibolo toll road and feel that the contract that was signed by the City of Cibolo is one of the worst contracts ever written.  The agreement that was entered into by City Council and our former Mayor in 2017, was completely one sided (in the developer’s favor).  It called for an economic feasibility study, that if proven favorable, would automatically trigger acceptance to move forward with construction of the toll road.  It also did not expressly state that the developer must build the toll road with two lanes in each direction, as was originally pitched to our citizens.  I continue to oppose the toll road plan going forward and will work with the new Cibolo City Attorney to determine what options may exist to mutually terminate the contract without financial consequence for the City of Cibolo and our taxpayers.

Goals

I will advocate for widening and repairing roads in our district.  In my opinion, Green Valley Road, Dean Road, FM 1103, Old Wiederstine Road, Cibolo Valley Drive, & Wiederstine Road are all in need of improvement.  I will work with our City Council members, our Mayor, TXDOT, AAMPO, SCUCISD, the City of Schertz, & Guadalupe County to find funding resources to widen & improve these roads without raising our property taxes.  I also plan to work with SCUCISD to see if they can expedite the process of building the new Junior High School on Green Valley Road in Cibolo.  Our schools are already becoming overcrowded & we need to prioritize construction of new schools in our area to accommodate our recent & future projected population growth.  I am in favor of issuing bonds, but not in favor of raising property taxes.  The population of Cibolo is projected to grow to over sixty thousand people within the next ten to twenty years.  Future growth will expand our available tax base & money will be available to pay back bond initiatives.  I am for smart commercial growth & intelligent expansion of residential home building.  We need more commercial tax revenue & I want to approve new businesses to set up shop here in Cibolo that offer our residents great restaurants & shopping.

Family Life

I was raised in far north Dallas, Texas near Preston & Campbell Road where I lived with my parents & brother whom is two years younger.  Growing up in Dallas Texas was a great experience & I developed enduring friendships in school & with other kids in my neighborhood while playing baseball, basketball, & football.  I met my wife in Dallas during the year 2000.  We married in 2001 and the Lord blessed us with a son.  We moved our family to San Antonio Texas in 2005 so that my wife (who grew up in San Antonio) could be closer to her parents and extended family.  In 2009 we moved to Schertz & the Lord blessed us again, in 2011, with our daughter.  In 2013 we moved from Schertz to Cibolo where my wife manages her own business, Simply Photography, as a family photographer.  Our children attend Cibolo Valley Elementary & Steele High School.  Our daughter enjoys gymnastics & she aspires to be a cheerleader.  Our son swam on the Steele High School swim team & he worked a summer / weekends job as a lifeguard at the Bentwood Ranch community pool.

Education

I attended elementary, junior high, & high school in north Dallas within the Richardson Independent School District (RISD).  I developed life-long friendships with most everyone I grew up with in north Dallas.  After high school, I was accepted to the University of North Texas in Denton.  There, I studied Business Administration and graduated with a Bachelors Degree as a Marketing Major.

During my junior year at the University of North Texas, I was invited to join the Beta Gama Sigma honor society, where I am still a member today.

Career Success

One month after graduating from UNT, I began my first job out of college with the Frost & Sullivan market research and consulting firm, where I worked in their Healthcare informatics division.  I spent two & a half years at this position before joining a different company, Health Portal Solutions, where I worked as an implementations manager for development of web portals for the healthcare insurance industry.  I spent four and a half years at Health Portal Solutions before moving on to WellMed Medical Management.  I currently work for WellMed in San Antonio as a Lead Business Systems Analyst, responsible for applications server administration & have been with the company since April of 2013.

I am also the co-owner of a website hosting company located in Austin Texas that we established in 2010.

Hobbies

During the fall & winter, I enjoy going to Wurstfest in New Braunfels, watching NFL football, & competing in a few fantasy football leagues.  I am a Dallas Cowboys season ticket holder & I enjoy taking my friends & family to AT&T Stadium up in Dallas to see our favorite team play.  Over the holidays, we enjoy spending time with my family in Dallas where our children get to spend time with their cousins.  I like to play sand volleyball here in Turning Stone & watersports such as pool volleyball.  During the summer months, our daughter loves to swim at our community pool & we make it a point to visit Schlitterbahn & to float the Comal river in New Braunfels.  We love our community here in South Texas & plan to make this our forever home.
